2008: ‘Ageing and decision-making in the community’, international symposium to be held on 8 and 9 October 2008, Rouen, Normandy, France.
The international symposium to be held in Rouen in October 2008 is being organized by REIACTIS in conjunction with the CIRTAI (UMR IDEES), Centre National pour la Recherche Scientifique. As well as following up on the deliberations begun in 2007, the 2008 event will include a number of issues that were not covered in depth the previous year, in particular, the spatial dimension of public policies. The 2008 symposium theme thus turns once again to the issue of power, but focuses this time on the local level: ‘Age and power: ageing and decision-making in the community.’
Discussion will focus on four main themes:
-The elderly transport user and mobility issues (public transport, accessibility, living environment, etc.)
-The elderly citizen and local policy-making (residents’ committee, ‘council of elders’, participation in determining local provision for the elderly, etc.)
-Material and intellectual resources that enable elderly people to be involved in decision-making. What expertise is needed for what types of participation? How can we train both the elderly themselves and gerontology professionals to facilitate older people’s involvement in decision-making?
-What decision-making role can be played by frail elderly people as users of home support services or as residents of old people’s homes (social committee, assessment by the elderly of home support services, involvement in quality certification, etc.)

These two events have been organized in conjunction with the RT7 special interest group of the AFS (Association Française de Sociologie) and the AISLF (Association Internationale des Sociologues de Langue Française).
